Milan comes to life in the early summer!  In and around the heart of Milan, Milanese and tourists alike enjoy the architecture, sidewalk cafes, fountains, shops, street artists, open-air cinema, concerts, and special festivals. A famous Milanese song says there are many wonderful Italian cities that people love to visit, but only one in which they want to live and work― Milan. As one of only a few American programs in Milan, IES Abroad offers students the opportunity to integrate fully into the life of this modern Italian city.

The Milan Summer Program offers enrollment in IES Abroad courses, housing in an honors residence hall and apartments, field trips, and extra-curricular activities.

A center for business and fashion industries, Milan offers a great environment for you to study Italian language and culture. The program allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture and enroll in language courses, ranging from beginner to advanced, designed to enhance language proficiency at an accelerated pace.  This program is also an ideal pre-session for the IES Abroad Milan fall and academic year programs.

Program Dates

These dates are preliminary and are subject to change. Students should not book flights according to these dates.

Academics

Our mission is simple: to provide you with the best study abroad program possible—which includes the highest quality academic and cultural experiences.

You enroll in a 4-credit language course and one 3-credit area studies course or internship seminar for a total of 7 credits. Placement in the Italian language course is determined by an on-site language test conducted during orientation.

Courses

This is a list of planned course offerings. After you are accepted, you will see a list of final course offerings in your MyIESabroad account.

Internships

Develop professional skills in the global workplace with an internship in Milan. You enroll in a 3-credit internship seminar, and work 16 hours each week in your placement.

Past internship placements have included the fashion, journalism, business, and music industries.

Field Study

IES Abroad Milan organizes field study trips that complement what you’re learning in the classroom, and contribute to your general knowledge of Italian culture and society.

Housing

Our job is to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding what landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Milan, it will feel like home.

Apartments – The furnished apartments are single-sex and typically house two to seven IES Abroad students. You may be housed with an Italian roommate who is either a college student or young working professional. Meals are not provided. Apartments offer equipped kitchens, Internet access, and a washing machine and are located close to public transportation.

Collegio di Milano – A residence hall for Italian and international honors students, the Collegio offers single rooms with private bathrooms and balconies. This option includes three meals daily and carries an additional fee. Visit www.collegiodimilano.it [3] for details.

Student Life

Part of making you feel at home in Milan is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it is an orientation program that prepares you, housing that is well-located and comfortable, or the field trips that take you to places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services. This is just one of the things we’re known for.

Orientation

The two-day orientation program is held in a picturesque town outside of Milan and is followed by a day-long tour of Milan.  Orientation sessions include:

  • Getting around Milan
  • Daily life in Italy
  • Personal safety
  • Apartment living
  • Course registration

Field Trips

The Milan staff organizes optional field trips to places of historical and cultural interest during the summer program.

In the past, students have traveled to:

  • Lake Maggiore – Visit the picturesque city of Stresa and take a ferry to the Borromean islands.
  • Cinque Terre – Hike between five villages located on Italy's breathtaking coastline.

Field trips, excluding some meals, are included in the program fee.
