The IES Abroad London Internship Program focuses on practical experience in the workplace, complemented by classroom learning and the cultivation of global leadership skills.
An internship with IES Abroad London provides vital insights into a career field, experience in the global workplace, practical exposure to the demands of specific jobs, and development of professional and personal skills. As well as developing your personal CV (résumé), an internship affords you the opportunity to directly experience the many cultures and people who make up the UK.
You spend four full days per week working at your internship placement, and one morning per week attending the required course.
You apply for your visa through BUNAC, and will receive more information about this process upon your acceptance. Please note that BUNAC does charge a significant application fee--see Program Costs for an exact amount.

As part of the London Summer Internship Program, you will enroll in a required course: SO/MG305 Leadership and Organizations: Cultural and Community Contexts and Practicum
This course focuses on theoretical and practical issues of leadership in business and non-profit organizational settings in Britain, complementing your internship placement. It addresses historical and cultural perspectives of leadership; the relationships between power, authority, and partnerships; ethical foundations of leadership; and social responsibility. The concept of ‘adaptive leadership’ is introduced as a method for responding to internal and external challenges. You collaborate as a group to develop a community project that serves as a workshop for the course content.
Securing an internship is a competitive process in the same way securing a job would be. The internship is the best match between your skills and what the workplace is seeking. Internships are routinely and formally monitored and all companies/organizations have been vetted by the IES Abroad Internship Office.
Prior to your arrival in London, companies and organizations are sent a selection of internship applicants’ CVs (résumés). From these CVs, they choose which students to interview. Therefore your ability to secure interviews will depend upon the quality of your CV.
You complete a phone interview with your potential host company/organization(s), organized by the Internship Coordinator in London.
The majority of students work with organizations in central London (Zones 1 & 2). London is a large city and some students are also placed at locations in London suburbs. Be prepared to be flexible with travel arrangements and commuting times.
Occasionally students may participate in a self-arranged internship, usually by utilizing personal contacts. Self-arranged internships are only possible through consultation with IES Abroad prior to arrival. You present IES Abroad with details of the prospective contact. IES Abroad will then contact the organization directly to establish whether the possibility will be a suitable match for both you and the organization. All new internship providers need to be vetted and continually monitored by IES Abroad. Please note final authorization to participate in a self-arranged internship in order to gain academic credit is at the discretion of IES Abroad and cannot be guaranteed.

Our job is to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding what landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave London, it will feel like home.
Nido Spitalfields Residence Hall – This new international students’ residence hall is located in central London. You and another student will share a two-bedroom apartment with individual bedrooms, shared bathroom facilities and a fully-equipped kitchen (there are no dining hall services). Bed linens are provided, but you’re responsible for your towels.
There are laundry facilities and common areas with wireless Internet (and 24-hour Internet access in your room) on various floors of the residence hall, and you will have access to the fitness facility (with a one-time induction fee) located in the building. Optional Field Trips IES Abroad London organizes a number of optional field trips as an integral part of its opportunities for cultural immersion in Britain. These trips explore areas of significant regional interest, and are led by faculty or experts who contextualize what you are witnessing and experiencing.

Students share the cost of these trips with IES Abroad.
Cultural Events Additionally, IES Abroad London staff members arrange for student attendance at special events. In recent years, students attended a football (soccer) match at local team Fulham FC and watched world class tennis at Wimbledon (UK Today program).
The IES Abroad London Center, situated in the central London neighborhood of Bloomsbury, is a two-minute walk from the British Museum.

John OckeyIES Abroad Director John brings over 12 years of experience with IES Abroad, including seven years with IES Abroad Milan and nearly three years with IES Abroad Siena before coming to IES Abroad London. During his time in Siena, John developed and implemented a banner program with a strong focus on cultural immersion and academic rigor. In Milan, he played a key role in improving and developing the Milan program, notably in the areas of student housing, student activities, orientation, and supervision of the student services staff. Prior to working for IES Abroad, John received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Italian Literature and Art History from Brigham Young University and worked in Geneva for the United Nations.
