These dates are preliminary and are subject to change. Students should not book flights according to these dates.
Our mission is simple: to provide you with the best study abroad program possible—which includes the highest quality academic and cultural experiences.
You enroll in one Spanish language course and one area studies course for a total of 6 credits. Highly advanced students as determined by the language assessment taken on-site in Madrid may enroll in a second area study course, instead of the required Spanish language course.
This is a list of planned course offerings. A final list of course offerings will be made available to you in your MyIESabroad account.
IES Abroad Madrid organizes field study trips that complement what you’re learning in the classroom, and contribute to your general knowledge of Spanish culture and society.
Our job is to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding what landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Madrid, it will feel like home.
Homestays – Live in Spanish homes with señoras or families. You have breakfast and one additional meal daily with your hosts. In many cases, two IES Abroad students are placed with a señora or family.
Homestays with Kitchen Privileges – If you prefer to purchase your own food and prepare your own meals, you may wish to consider this housing option. If you choose this option, you receive a meal credit. A very limited number of these placements are available.
Apartments – Share an apartment located in a residential area near the IES Abroad Madrid Center. Apartments are fully furnished, including a fully-equipped kitchen. Utilities and regular cleaning are included, as well as the support of a Spanish Apartment guide. Space is limited and meals are not included.
Part of making you feel at home in Madrid is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it is an orientation program that makes you feel prepared, housing that is welllocated and comfortable, or the field trips that take you places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services. This is just one of the things we’re known for.
During orientation, you receive information about Spanish culture, housing, transportation, and extracurricular activities. You will also have the opportunity to meet and interact with fellow IES Abroad Madrid students and staff.
Typically, students take a day trip, sponsored by IES Abroad, during orientation. A Spanish language placement exam is also administered.
IES Abroad Madrid routinely arranges and subsidizes cultural events such as flamenco and cooking classes and guest lectures for the student body and for individual courses.
Possible field trip options include:
Segovia – Visit the site of an impressive Roman aqueduct, many historical palaces, and churches of Spain’s Golden Age.
Rascafría de Madre – Hike Spain’s central mountain range, known for its vistas and outdoor sports.
Valencia – Experience a city famous for its modern architecture and home to the largest aquarium in Europe.
