This course is an introduction to the history of immigration in France. Focusing on immigration, the course will study the history of France, European History, and Colonial/Post-Colonial history (which explains in part the large presence of Sub-Saharan and North African immigrants). The course will also link the present to the past and put in perspective current debates faced by French society: clandestine immigration, secularization, the ban of the Islamic head-scarf, etc.

In-class discussions, lectures, readings, videos, excursion to Marseille, and meetings with representatives of various associations
