An urban adventure awaits you in London, one of the largest cities in Europe. With our Study London Program, you’ll get a hands-on education in this iconic city—think: Big Ben, Parliament, Buckingham Palace—and all it has to offer.

The goal of our 35-year-old program is to help you explore contemporary London, both physically and culturally. Gain a deeper knowledge of British culture, including the central importance of history to the British. You’ll also explore the global impact of Britain on Western culture, including art, literature, and financial and political systems.

London will also be your classroom. Get to know the British culture and arts by visiting some of the city’s many museums and art galleries, including the British Museum (a two-minute walk from our Center!), the National Gallery, and the Tate Galleries. Learn about the city’s history from your world-class professors and then visit London’s three UNESCO world heritage sites: the Tower of London, Westminster Palace, and Kew’s Royal Botanic Gardens. Everywhere you turn in London is a new opportunity to learn more—strolling down the streets, passing the many book stores, watching the street performers, and listening to live music. Welcome to study abroad!

We want you to feel at home in London, so we will do everything we can to help you integrate into life in London, from internships to cultural activities. We organize events to help you make the most of your time in London, such as attending a sporting event and visiting some of the city’s markets. Plus, IES Abroad will take you to some of England’s iconic sites, such as Stonehenge and William Shakespeare’s birthplace.

Academics

Our mission is simple: to provide you with the best study abroad program possible—which includes the highest quality academic and cultural experiences.

We offer unique courses that explore Arts, Literature, Business, Politics, and Science, as well as other topics, through an in-depth and hands-on approach. Our world-class professors and course options at prestigious local universities enhance your academic experience and provide you with new perspectives each day in class.

You enroll in 15–19 credit hours per semester, and all courses are worth 3 credits unless otherwise specified. Credits awarded for supplementary university courses vary.

You create your own academic experience by selecting from the following required and optional program components:

IES Abroad Courses (3 credits each)
IES Abroad Workshops in the Creative and Performing Arts (3 credits each)
IES Abroad Internship (3 credits for the combined internship & seminar)
Partner University Course (supplementary course at either City University, Queen Mary, or the School of Oriental and African Studies, 4 credits each. Program fee includes one supplementary course at a local university per term)

Workshops in the Creative & Performing Arts
Creative workshops are courses that focus on the production of a piece of creative work (writing, film, or fine art). Past workshops have been offered in Fine Arts, Film/Video, and Playwriting. Creative workshops frequently require long hours in addition to regular class time.

You will often be asked to work on your own initiative in order to bring a piece of writing or a film clip into class. The creative work within class will by definition have a more open and experiential structure than that of an academic course.

Partner Institution(s)

In addition to IES Abroad courses, IES Abroad London encourages you to enroll in a course offered at one of several prestigious British institutions. This is a great way to experience first-hand the British higher education system, and meet British students. You may enroll in one supplementary course per semester for no additional fee. If you choose to enroll in more than one supplementary course, there is a per-course fee. Supplementary courses are available at the following universities:

You must meet the university’s specific requirements, including a GPA of 3.0 or above, and, in certain disciplines, prerequisites and junior or senior standing. You should select courses only in your major or minor.

Recognized as a major world center of Asian, Middle Eastern, and African studies, SOAS comprises more than 200 scholars, the largest group in the world dedicated to studying Asia and Africa. Internships

While adding study abroad to your resume is impressive enough, adding an international internship experience
is even more powerful, and can help distinguish your application for graduate school or a job opportunity in today’s competitive job market.

An internship provides an invaluable cultural experience, and helps you develop professional and personal skills. All IES Abroad internships are supervised and you must enroll in an accompanying seminar to earn credit.

If you’re interested in participating in an internship for the semester, be aware that some internship options have earlier application deadlines. You must complete your program application first, and then you can apply for the internship. (You won’t have access to the internship forms until you’ve been admitted into the program.) You need to complete and submit all of your internship application materials by May 1 for Fall, and by October 1 for Spring.

Field Study

IES Abroad London organizes field study trips that complement IES Abroad courses and contribute to a general knowledge of British culture and society.

Many IES Abroad London field trip destinations double as field study destinations for students enrolled in specific courses. For field study trips that are required for a course, the cost for the trip is included in the program fee. For field study trips that are recommended but not required, you will be responsible for a portion of the trip cost. Past field study excursions include:

Performances at London’s West End Fringe and Royal Shakespeare theaters

Housing

Our job is to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding what landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave London, it will feel like home.

Nido King’s Cross Residence Hall – This international students’ residence hall is located in central London, and you and another IES Abroad student will share a double room and a bathroom (en suite). Amenities include:

Student Life

Part of making you feel at home in London is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it is an orientation program that makes you feel prepared, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, or the field trips that take you to places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services. This is just one of the things we’re known for.

Orientation

The IES Abroad orientation program takes place in and around London, and is designed to orient you to the program, your fellow students, and to London.

Additionally, CORE™, IES Abroad’s Comprehensive Orientation & Re-entry Program, begins during orientation and continues through the semester with activities focusing on academic and cultural adjustment, goal achievement, and preparing for the return home. Detailed information about academics, housing, public transportation, cultural adjustment, health and safety, and other important topics is also covered. Other highlights may include walking tours of London neighborhoods, and a field trip to Greenwich or Windsor Castle.

You also learn about the teaching methods of British professors and the Study London Program, including internships, academic policies, and field trips. You will receive academic advising and finalize your course registration during orientation.

Extracurricular Activities & Cultural Events

Redefine the way you live and learn in London through our cultural events, such as:

Touring of Parliament, royal palaces, and gardens
Attending local sporting events, such as the English Premier League
Outings to London’s diverse markets

Field Trips

Although your adventure begins in London, our field trips take you to other great cities around England and Scotland to provide contrast and context for what you are learning in London. You share a portion of the cost with IES Abroad. Past destinations are listed below. IES Abroad field trip destinations, activities, and length of stay may vary according to term and availability.

Spend the night in Edinburgh, tour the highlands’ stunning scenery, dance at a traditional Scottish Ceilidh, and visit Loch Ness.

Stonehenge, Bath, and Salisbury

Visit mysterious Stonehenge, the ancient Roman baths in Bath, and the Salisbury Cathedral, one of the finest examples of the early English Gothic architecture style in Britain.

Explore the north of England, including a night in the historic town of York. Other sites of interest include stunning national parks, the Bronte Parsonage, Castle Howard, and Fountains Abbey.

Explore the historic maze of twisting alleyways and enjoy an optional visit to the royal pavilion, one of Europe’s most exotic royal palaces.

Visit historic Christ Church College and take a walking tour for a look at works by a famous group of 19th-century artists.

See the beautiful university town of Cambridge, situated north of London. Explore the different colleges and visit the world famous King’s College.

Visit Shakespeare’s house, place of birth, and place of his burial, Holy Trinity Church.

John Ockey
IES Abroad Director
John brings over 12 years of experience with IES Abroad, including seven years with IES Abroad Milan and nearly three years with IES Abroad Siena before coming to IES Abroad London. During his time in Siena, John developed and implemented a banner program with a strong focus on cultural immersion and academic rigor. In Milan, he played a key role in improving and developing the Milan program, notably in the areas of student housing, student activities, orientation, and supervision of the student services staff. Prior to working for IES Abroad, John received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Italian Literature and Art History from Brigham Young University and worked in Geneva for the United Nations.
