Study abroad in Dublin on the IES Abroad Dublin January Term study abroad program.

This program allows you to enroll in a set curriculum and earn 3 credits at the Gaiety School of Acting-National Theatre School of Ireland (GSA-NTSI), Ireland’s premier acting school. The course in acting, consisting of intensive, practical rehearsal workshops, comprises about 60% of the training, supplemented by elements of voice, movement and improvisation. You read the plays of canonic Irish writers, including Samuel Beckett, Brian Friel, Sean O’Casey and John Synge and work in intensive rehearsals of scene work toward a final presentation.

The conservatory-style training is taught at the Gaiety School of Acting-National Theatre School of Ireland with acting and voice teachers from the intensive actor training course. This intensive acting program is open to students at all levels of training.

We offer a unique courses through the Gaiety School of Acting that explores Acting and Theater through an in-depth and hands-on approach. Through our study abroad program, world-class professors enhance your academic experience and provide you with new perspectives both in and out of class.

You take one course for a total of 3 credits. The Acting course consists of practical rehearsal workshop, as well as training in voice, movement and improvisation.

Housing

Our job is to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding what landmarks to see first or discovering the best restaurants—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Dublin, it will feel like home.

You live in an apartment in a residential area of Dublin that is within walking distance or a short bus ride from the IES Abroad Center and the GSA-NTSI. You share a bedroom and will live with other IES Abroad students. Meals are not provided, but you have access to a full kitchen to prepare your meals. Apartments are fully furnished and include Internet access. Linens are provided.

Student Life

Part of making you feel at home in Dublin is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it’s the orientation program that prepares you for what’s ahead, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, or the field trips that take you to places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services. This is just one of the things we’re known for.

Orientation

After arrival in Dublin, you participate in an orientation program which introduces them to the city of Dublin, the Dublin J-term program, and student life in the city.

Field Trips

Complementing the training course is attendance at performances in Dublin’s many theatre venues. Possible venues include:

Visits to other cultural attractions also are planned, such as the James Joyce Museum, the National Museum of Ireland, and the Book of Kells in the historic library of Trinity College Dublin.

Center

IES Abroad Dublin [4]

The IES Abroad Dublin Center occupies a red-brick Victorian building that was originally a post office and has been completely renovated. The Center is walking distance from St. Stephen’s Green and Trinity College.

Ashley Taggart
IES Abroad Center Director
Ashley Taggart has directed IES Abroad Dublin since it opened in Summer 2000. He previously lectured at IES Abroad London for five years. He holds a master's degree in Renaissance Literature and a doctorate in Modern Drama from the University of York. Originally from Belfast in Northern Ireland, he has written short stories and screenplays.
