The IES Abroad Barcelona Summer Intensive Internship Program is designed to develop students' Spanish language and professional skills through an internship placement. Spending the summer interning in Barcelona, students not only gain vital insights into a career field and develop an international resume, but also have the opportunity to experience Barcelona's unique culture and beautiful cityscape.

Over the course of the summer, you will come to know its vibrant plazas and winding streets for yourself. The Barcelona Summer Intensive Internship Program offers enrollment in IES Abroad courses, a wide array of internship opportunities, housing in student apartments with live-in Spanish Resident Assistants to facilitate your cultural immersion, and field trips; you will have the opportunity to meet Spanish and international students alike. Starting at the IES Abroad Center in the center of Barcelona near the Plaza Catalunya, this program will help you to gain a meaningful cultural experience and a deeper knowledge of what it means to be a citizen of the world.

IES Abroad Barcelona offers a wide range of internships in the following fields:

  • Business
  • Media & Communication
  • Language Teaching
  • Volunteer Organizations & NGOs
Program Dates

These dates are preliminary and are subject to change. Students should not book flights according to these dates.

Academics

Our mission is simple: to provide you with the best study abroad program possible—which includes the highest quality academic and cultural experiences.

All students in the Intensive Internship program enroll in:

  • 16 hours per week at internship placement
  • a 4-credit corresponding internship seminar
  • Either a 4-credit Spanish language class or a 3-credit Area Studies course taught in Spanish (available only for students who place into SP400)

Courses

This is a list of planned course offerings.  A final list of course offerings will be made available to you in your MyIESabroad account.

Housing

Our job is to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding what landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Barcelona, it will feel like home.

During your time abroad, you live in a student apartment with three to five other IES Abroad students in mostly double or triple rooms. Live-in Spanish Resident Assistants (RAs) guide you in cultural integration. No meals are provided, but the apartments have fully-equipped kitchens.

Student Life

Part of making you feel at home in Barcelona is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it is an orientation program that makes you feel prepared, housing that is well-located and comfortable, or the field trips that take you to places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services. This is just one of the things we’re known for.

Orientation

During the first few days after arrival, you will receive practical information on housing, transportation, and extracurricular activities, and learn about Barcelona and Catalan culture through scavenger hunts, Spanish language classes, a cinema forum, and local walking tours.

Field Trips

You can participate in field trips and extracurricular activities in and around Barcelona, and cultural activities at the IES Abroad Center.

Take a three-day study trip as part of the program. Theses trips are academic, not solely touristic, in nature. Past destinations have included:

  • Costa Brava
  • The south of France
  • Valencia (home to a world-famous aquarium)
  • Tarragona (home of the Roman ruins of Tarraco)

You can also take an optional one-day trip for an additional fee. Destinations may include:

  • The mountain monastry of Montserrat
  • The lava flows of La Garrotxa
