Description: 

Production and performance of a play in French. The play is chosen from an established French repertoire and varies from year to year. Plays performed in the past include Molière’s “les Précieuses ridicules”, plays by Marivaux, Beaumarchais’ “le Mariage de Figaro”, Sartre’s “Huis clos”, Anouilh’s “Antigone”, Giradoux’ “Ondine” and Genêt’s “Les bonnes”.

Prerequisites: 

Some knowledge of theater in student's native language

Method of presentation: 

Demonstration of theater techniques (movement and sound). Practice of the rhythmic and sonorous aspects of stage French.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Demonstrated familiarity with all aspects of theater production, script memorization, rehearsals. Vocal exercises and techniques are emphasized. The final grade is based on students’ contribution (acting, assisting the director, costume design, playbill, etc.) to the production of the play which is held in a theatre before an audience of 200 to 300. Regular attendance (class and rehearsals) is required and a spirit of teamwork essential to the success of the play.

Following the course introduction, a play is selected and auditions are held over a four to five week period. Over the next five weeks, students prepare roles and decisions made concerning set design and production. During the two to three weeks preceding the performance, intensive rehearsals (10-12) are held, followed by full dress rehearsal the day before the actual performance.
