The charming Provençal town of Arles, with a 2,000-year-old roman arena at its center, is famous for its beautiful architecture and its association with Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne, and Picasso. Many dance, music, photography, theater, and folklore festivals take place in and around the city throughout the summer, making it an ideal location for summer study in France.

This program gives you a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in French language study, the culture of the Midi region of France, and French-taught interdisciplinary courses. Language-intensive lunches, conducted three days a week, allow you to practice your French with IES Abroad staff and professors while sampling the local cuisine. Fridays are reserved for mandatory field study activities and excursions organized by IES Abroad.

Field Study

IES Abroad Arles organizes field study trips that complement IES Abroad courses and contribute to your general knowledge of French culture and society.

Housing

Our job is to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding what landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Arles, it will feel like home.

After orientation, you live with local families. Host families provide breakfast daily and dinner three times a week. IES Abroad provides three language lunches with faculty and staff each week.

Student Life

Part of making you feel at home in Arles is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it is an orientation program that makes you feel prepared, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, or the field trips that take you to places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services. This is just one of the things we’re known for.

Orientation

You stay in a local hotel during the 2 day orientation in the Camargue region just outside Arles.  You also take an afternoon field trip to the Alpilles —a small mountain range in southern France.

Field Trips

Day-trip destinations may include Avignon, le Pont du Gard, and les Saintes-Mariesde-la-Mer.
