Amsterdam, a city long associated with notions of tolerance and openness, is the perfect backdrop against which to study Art History, Literature, and Sociology through the lens of Gender Studies. We invite you to explore Amsterdam's history and present, and to consider how these notions are—or are not—changing. Amsterdam is your classroom, with field study visits to world-class museums and noteable Amsterdam sites playing a major role in each course. This program also includes a field study trip to Berlin, to further investigate your topics of study.

Program Dates

These dates are preliminary and are subject to change. Students should not book flights according to these dates.

Academics

Our mission is simple: to provide you with the best study abroad experience possible—which includes the highest quality academic and cultural experiences.

We offer unique courses that explore the themes of gender and sexuality through an in-depth and interdisciplinary approach. Our world-class professors enhance your academic experience and provide you with new perspectives each day in class.

All students enroll in two 3-credit courses and have the opportunity to immerse themselves in local culture through activities and field study focusing on current events and daily life in Amsterdam.

Courses
Field Study

In addition to the long-weekend field study trip to Berlin, IES Abroad Amsterdam organizes field study trips around Amsterdam that complement IES Abroad courses and contribute to your general knowledge of Dutch culture and society.

Housing

Our job is to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding what landmarks to see first or discovering the best restaurants—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Amsterdam, it will feel like home.

You live in a co-ed, international student apartment with easy access to public transportation. Single and double apartments are available; single room incur an additional fee.

In the double rooms, two students share a studio apartment with a bathroom and kitchenette. You may be placed with a non-IES Abroad roommate. In the single rooms, students have a studio apartment with a private bathroom and kitchenette.

Student Life

Part of making you feel at home in Amsterdam is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it’s the orientation program that prepares you for what’s ahead, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, or the field trips that take you to places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services. This is just one of the things we’re known for.

Orientation

During your first few days in the Netherlands, you get to know the IES Abroad staff, the city and your fellow students on a field trip to the Zaanse Schans and boat tour of Amsterdam's historic canals. IES Abroad orientation addresses intercultural understanding, personal safety, and practical aspects of life in Amsterdam.

Field Trips

Although your adventure begins in Amsterdam, our field trips take you to other great destinations in Europe  to provide contrast and context for what you are learning.

As part of your coursework, you travel with your fellow students to Berlin on a long-weekend field study trip to explore sites relevant to your areas of study. In addition to course-related field study, IES Abroad sponsors visits to the Medieval castle of Muiderslot and the fortification island of Pampus. You also have the opportunity to visit a shrimp boat and to cycle around the beautiful island of Texel.
