This course analyses the incorporation of the Spanish economy into the system of international relations and economic integration. With this focus, it studies the historical formation and the current situation of the main international economic institutions, the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and World Trade Organization, and others, as well as the characteristics of and perspectives on the phenomena of cooperation and integration in different areas of the world. This study is completed with an analysis of external policies of the European Union and the role of Spain within the EU and the most relevant international economic institutions.
Prerequisites:
Basic knowledge of International Relations, International Economy, Macroeconomics and Economic History.
Method of presentation:
Lectures by the instructor, supported with bibliographical and other didactic materials, followed by debates with students.
Required work and form of assessment:
Student participation (15%) Two written examinations (midterm, 30%, and final, 35%) and one required paper (20%).

1. Spain and the system of economic relations. International economic organizations: definitions, basic characteristics, stages, agents, processes.
2. The United Nations system. Economic cooperation in the world: the role of Spain and the European Union. Cooperation forums for developed countries.
3. The International Monetary Fund and monetary cooperation. International financing and the problems of over- endebtness of developing countries. The international monetary system and the euro.
4. The World Bank group and cooperation for development policies. Relations between the European Union and developing countries.
5. The World Trade Organization. The development of international trade. The commercial and agrarian policies of the European Union.
6. International cooperation and aid for development. Spain in the frame of the OECD. Spanish cooperation in Latin America: economic, social and political aspects. Spain´s relations with the Mediterranean and the Arab world.
7. The internationalization of economic relations and the role of multinational companies. The process of internationalization of the Spanish economy. Spain´s accession to the EU.
8. International economic integration and areas of integration in the world. Processes of integration in Europe and the Americas (FTAA, NAFTA, Mercosur, Andean Community, Central America and the Caribbean). Open regionalism and European-American cooperation.
9. European Integration: basic characteristics. The effects of European policies on the Spanish economy. The European Union Eastern enlargement: implications for Spain. The EU and the international economic organization.
10. Globalization and new perspectives of international cooperation. Proposals for a new regulating frame for international economic relations.
