Description: 

Survey of Spain’s major architectural styles. Theoretical lectures focus on main characteristics of each style, external influences and the socio-economic, geographical, political and religious factors which contributed to diverse styles. Discussion sessions are supplemented with slides and other visuals to illustrate each style and highlight key features.

Two 1 and 1/2 hour class sessions per week; site visits.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Mid-term; final exam; and an individual research project. Class attendance is mandatory.

content: 

Analysis of the evolution of Spain’s architecture through the study of major characteristics, external influences, socio-economic factors and regional variations. Students are given specific vocabulary for each unit and style and must demonstrate their ability to apply knowledge acquired in class and identify the periods and styles of specific architectural examples.

1.       Prehistoric art: Megalithic period.
2.       The Romanization process: Roman architecture on the Iberian Peninsula, Paleo-Christian Art.
3.       Barbaric invasions: Visigothic architecture.
4.       The Moors: Islamic architecture in Spain, Mozarabic and Mudejaric art.
5.       Pre-Romanic art: Asturian art.
6.       Art in the year 1000: Roman architecture, Catalan Romanesque, the Road of Santiago, the Castillian- Leon Romanesque.
7.       Feudal and urban society: the medieval city, Gothic architecture, regional variations
8.       The Spanish Renaissance: 15th and 16th centuries, Plateresque and Herrerian periods.
9.       The 17th Century: Barroque architecture, the Churriguera style, the push toward Latin America, Spanish Rococco.
10.     The 18th Century: Neoclassicist architecture in Spain.
11.     Urban society and the evolution of architecture in the 19th Century; Romanticism-Eclecticism.
12.     Industrial architecture.
13.     Modernism in architecture: the works of Gaudi
14.     Post-war architecture; monumentalism
15.     Contemporary architecture.
16.     Popular Spanish architecture.
