Description: 

A study of the role of Ireland in the continuing evolution of the European Union into the United States of Europe. The course will examine the development of the institutions of the European Union, in particular the strengthening role of the European Parliament. The course aims to explore the impact of the European Union on business, political, cultural and social life in the Member States. The effects of Economic and Monetary Union and the arguments for and against Economic and Monetary Union will be examined.   The course will examine the impact of EU policies on Ireland and look at moves towards increased harmonization at the European level. A further element of the course will be the enlargement of the European Union to include other countries in Central and Eastern Europe as well as Turkey.  This is a general introduction to the European Union and there is no need for the students to have previously studied politics, economics or international relations prior to this course.

Attendance policy: 

Because IES Abroad courses are designed to take advantage of the unique contribution of the instruction and the lecture/discussion format, regular class attendance is mandatory. Any missed class, without a legitimate reason will be reflected in the final grade. A legitimate reason would include: documented illness or family bereavement. Travel, (including travel delays) is not a legitimate reason.

Learning outcomes: 

• To understand the reasons for the existence of the EU
• To comprehend the structure and operation of the EU institutions, and to critically analyse them
• To analyse Ireland’s relationship and involvement in the EU
• To understand and evaluate the policies of the European Union, as well as their affect on Ireland
• To understand the European economic model and how it compares to the US
• To assess the success of the euro and its future
• To evaluate the future of the EU

Method of presentation: 

Lectures, discussion sessions, tutorials, guest speakers, multimedia, and field trip

Required work and form of assessment: 

Chapter summary (20%), discussion of weekly news items
(10%), written assignment (20%), presentation (20%), final test (30%).
