Taught in English, this program gives you the chance to visit important landmarks and immerse yourself in law like you never have before.

Based in the historical city of Freiburg, Germany, this unique program introduces you to law studies with a special focus on the European heritage and contemporary European culture of law and justice.

As part of your coursework, you also visit cities like Strasbourg, Karlsruhe, Geneva, and Lausanne to see first-hand what you're learning about in the classroom.

Europe will be your classroom. Imagine visiting the European Parliament and discussing current social and political issues with EU officials, or getting to meet with local legal experts to discuss contemporary topics in European law. Welcome to study abroad!

You participate in three one-week-long modules, that delve into topics such as human rights, arbitration, and international dispute settlement in European countries. You conclude your January abroad by participating in a Moot Court with your fellow students.

We want you to feel at home in your host city, so we do everything we can to help you integrate into life in Freiburg. From cultural events at our Center to tours of the city and local sites of interest, IES Abroad is there to provide all the on-site support you need.

Program Dates

These dates are preliminary and are subject to change. Students should not book flights according to these dates.

Academics

Our mission is simple: to provide you with the highest quality academic and cultural experience abroad possible. We offer a unique program that is broken down into different modules that cover:

  • Comparative law in the field of constitutional and institutional law
  • EU material law
  • Human rights
  • Arbitration
  • Dispute settlement

The program is organized into three one-week-long classroom modules, which are combined with relevant field study trips.

You also have the rare advantage of meeting with legal experts in two master classes during the term, where you can discuss contemporary topics in European law and justice.

The final session of the program, a Moot Court, concludes your January term in Freiburg.

Field Study

As a major component of the program, you participate in multiple field study trips to prominent EU institutions and important cities across Europe. These trips are included in the program fee.

Possible trips include visits to:

  • European Parliament - Strasbourg, France
  • European Court of Human Rights - Strasbourg, France
  • German Federal Constitutional Court - Karlsruhe, Germany
  • World Trade Organization (WTO) - Geneva, Switzerland
  • International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Court of Arbitration for Sport - Lausanne, Switzerland
Housing

Our job is to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding what landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Freiburg, it will feel like home.

Residence Hall -You have the unique opportunity to live in a single or double room in a co-ed suite shared with German and international students. Suites have shared kitchens and baths.

Meals are not included in the program fee. Students typically prepare meals at their residences or dine in Freiburg’s affordable student cafeterias.

Student Life

Part of making you feel at home in Freiburg is doing our best to help you feel safe and cared for. Whether it’s the orientation program that prepares you for what’s ahead, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, or the day trips that take you to places off the beaten path—we’re all about our student services. This is one of the things we’re known for.

Orientation

The program begins with an orientation that introduces you to the IES Abroad European Union staff, your fellow students, and the city of Freiburg. Topics such as academics, housing, transportation, and health and safety are covered.

Additionally, CORE™, IES Abroad’s Comprehensive Orientation & Re-entry Experience, begins during orientation and continues throughout the semester with activities focusing on cultural adjustment, goal achievement, and preparation for the return home.
