This course is taught at Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ). Advanced study of grammar with an emphasis on verb forms. Students will improve oral and written comprehension and communication.

Prerequisites:

Placement exam

Method of presentation:

Short grammar explanations, class discussion, group work, and activities. Students complete exercises, journals, and readings outside of class.

Required work and form of assessment:

Attendance and participation are mandatory. Final grades are determined by the following:

Participation and homework (10%)
Short quizzes (20%)
Writing exercises and revisions (20%)
Oral presentations (10%)
Mid-term exam (20%)
Final exam (20%)

Simple and compound past perfect.
Imperfect.
Ser vs. estar; saber vs. Conocer.
Indirect object – special uses.
Time clauses.
Accents.
Subjunctive mood – nominal clauses, adjective clauses, adverbial clauses, special uses.
Definite and indefinite articles.
Simple and compound pronouns.
Adjectives – qualifying, explicative, specific, superlatives.
Relative pronouns and cuyo.
Reflexive verbs.
Impersonal se and the passive voice.
Infinitive – uses and meanings.
Participles and gerunds – uses and meanings.
