At our Centers around the world, IES Abroad staff members are making huge strides in becoming more sustainable.
The following are examples of steps that have been taken within some of our Centers:
Paper
Printing publications on paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as Mixed Sources, meaning that the paper is made of or comes from well-managed forests, controlled sources, and recycled wood or fiber
Scanning and e-mailing documents, instead of printing and mailing
Using e-mail to communicate with students, professors, and staff
Printing double-sided or reusing backsides of paper as scratch
Instituting a printing quota to avoid paper waste
Replacing paper towel dispensers with hand dryers in washrooms
Recycling
Recycling paper, cardboard, aluminum, and plastic
Using recycleable ink cartridges
Collecting batteries for recycling
Renewable Energy
Using renewable wind energy to power facilities in some locations
Energy Conservation
Avoiding use of artificial lighting during day-time hours
Turning off lights and/or air conditioning when offices or classrooms are not in use
Turning down heat during evenings and weekends
Installing compact fluorescent light bulbs
Consolidating offices during the summer term to reduce air conditioning and utility needs
Turning off and/or unplugging electronic equipment when not in use
Commuting to work by foot, bicycle, or public transportation
