Description: 

Introduction of pronunciation and basic grammatical structure of the German language: articles, noun gender and declension, pronouns, verb tenses, simple and complex sentences. Aural/oral communications exercises to develop students' ability to communicate in German in selected everyday situations at a simple level.

Method of presentation: 

Oral and written exercises, excursions to post-office, market, cafes, etc.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Regular attendance and participation in class work, regular assignments, quizzes, midterm exam, comprehensive final exam.

content: 

 

  1. Pronunciation practice and training in listening and reading comprehension.
  2. Situational pattern drills to develop habitual and automatic control of language structures by analogy.
  3. Attainment of a basic vocabulary (600-800 words) related to everyday life.
  4. Conversation practice in elementary dialogues.
  5. Writing practice in elementary reports, dialogues, and letters on daily routines, etc.
  6. Reading of simple texts on life and customs in Austria (e.g. Heurigen, Cafes, Special Seasons, etc.), easy texts from the Reader (e.g. fables, anecdotes).

Grammar

  1. Fundamental terminology.
  2. Conjugation of regular and irregular verbs in the present, future, and present perfect tenses.
  3. Past tense (sein, haben).
  4. Modal verbs.
  5. Word order in statements, questions, commands (imperative), main- and subclauses.
  6. Nominative, accusative and dative cases of nouns, pronouns, articles, and adjective endings.
  7. Accusative, dative, and two-way prepositions.
  8. Reflexive pronouns (accusative and dative).
  9. Comparison of adjectives and adverbs.
