This course analyzes the different perceptions that Spaniards have about the towns and cultures that have coexisted and continue to coexist in modern day Spain. Students focus on three different populations living in 20th Century Spain: the gypsies, Arabs, and Latin Americans. There is also reference to these groups from the history of the Peninsula and during colonization. The course examines how perceptions about “the other” are constructed, including the repercussions of these ideas on multicultural societies, and the necessary instruments in order to manage cultural difference.
Method of presentation:
Weekly readings with student reflection and debates in class. Students examine surveys about general attitudes, the press, and movies or reports. Visits to institutions, associations and relevant neighborhoods in order to study the perception of “the other”. Final project on Granada multicultural neighborhoods.
