Description: 

Examination and analysis of the effects of France's political and cultural history on the evolution of Paris; the social life and customs in Paris, and the development of city planning and architectural styles in Paris through the ages.  Although designed as a follow-up to H351, it may be taken as a one-semester course.

Prerequisites: 

Good knowledge of French

Possible Field Trips 
1. Most ancient houses and quarters of Paris.  App. dates: 1300 to 1600.  Porte Coquillère, Rue du Jour, Hotel de Royaumont, Rues Montmartre, Montorgueil, Etienne Marcel, Rues de Montmorency, Beaubourg, Volta.  3hrs.
2. 17th century Paris.  Historical period:  Henri IV (1600-1620).  La Place Dauphine et le Pont Neuf (Walking tour of la Cité).  2hrs.
3. 17th century Paris.  Historical period:  Henri IV (1600-1620).  Place des Vosges (formerly Place Royale) Musée Carnavalet.  3hrs
4. 17th century Paris.  Historical period:  Louis XIII (1620-1645).  Ile St. Louis, including the Hôtel de Lauzun.  2hrs.
5. 17th century Paris.  Historical period:  Louis XIV (1660-1715).  Hôtel des Invalides (Map Room, Arms & Weapons), La Place Vendôme.  3 hrs.
6. Le Grand Louvre.  Medieval Louvre:  Fortress of Phillipe Auguste, Salles d'Objets de Famille.  Walk through gallery of French paintings.  2.5 hrs.
7. Le Grand Louvre.  Apollo’s Gallery- Trésors de la Couronne (Royal Treasure).  Most recent additions- Sully, Nouveaux Espaces, Sous le Carrousel, etc.  2.5hrs.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Overviews throughout the semester on each period, a term paper, mid-term and final exam. The term paper (or “mémoire”) involves research on a particular historical period or area of Paris with an emphasis on practical application of knowledge acquired in the course.
