An interdisciplinary course focusing on presenting and analyzing the role of French-speaking immigrants living in France and the « centralizing » role of Paris. By bringing in special lecturers, visiting a Maison de Services publics (provides administrative help for immigrants) in Saint-Denis (in the suburbs of Paris), and by reading numerous articles, we will try to understand the historical formation of French-speaking immigrant communities in Paris, their insertion into urban space, their place in the dominant discourse, and their social organization. Concentrating on identity tensions brought forth by their peripheral position, we will also look at new forms of cultural expression in these communities such as religion, music, cinema, literature.

Some social science background or at least one introductory level social science course)
Required work and form of assessment:
Participation (demonstrate that reading has been completed, question sheets) 20%; two written papers, 30%; one oral presentation* 15%; mid-term, 15%; final essay exam, 20%.:
