Description: 

A continuation of the study of the basic grammatical structure of the German language aimed at developing communicative skills in everyday situations and a deeper understanding of German syntactic structures.

Prerequisites: 

One semester of college/ university level German or equivalent

Learning outcomes: 

After completing the course, students are able to:
- Understand the main content of everyday conversations and brief radio announcements or phone messages,
- Obtain the most important information from short topic related texts/ messages, everyday advertisements and public notice boards,
- Introduce themselves and exchange personal details in a conversation,
- Ask and answer questions in conversation about everyday topics,
- Agree on something or make arrangements in topic related everyday conversation.

Method of presentation: 

Oral and written exercises, excursions

Required work and form of assessment: 

Regular attendance and participation in class work, regular assignments, quizzes, short oral presentations, and final exam.

Grading:
30% Oral participation (includes an oral presentation)
25% Written homework and composition assignments
20% Tests and quizzes
25% Final exam

content: 

GENERAL CONTENT:
- Pronunciation practice and training in listening and reading comprehension.
- Situational pattern samples to develop a feel for and flexibility in usage of contextual language.
- Accumulation of additional vocabulary, enabling students to communicate easily in everyday life situations, and starting to go beyond that.
- Conversation practice in slightly advanced dialogues and speeches.
- Listening comprehension practice.
- Writing practice in elementary compositions.
- Reading of texts about life and customs in Germany, easy-leveled news reports.

GRAMMATICAL CONTENT:
- Thorough review of GR100 structures.
- Function of accusative and dative cases in German.
- Conjugation of regular and irregular verbs in past perfect tense.
- Past tense of modal verbs.
- Comparative and superlative of adjectives.
- Introduction to verbs with prepositions.
- Sentence structures in German: introduction to subordinate clauses.
- Subjunctive II for polite request.
- Accusative and dative of nouns.
