This course takes a multi-disciplinary approach to the history of Paris from its origins to the 20th century. The major political and cultural events of French history are examined in terms of the growth and development of Paris and its social life, customs, city planning, and architecture. Tours of La Montagne Sainte Geneviève, Ile Saint Louis, Quartier Saint Roche-Saint Honoré, and l’Hôtel Royal des Invalides complement lecture and discussion.

6. The 15th Century and English rule: Joan of Arc-Charles VII-Louis XI-Louis XII
7. The 16th Century: Francis I-Le Louvre- Henry II-the Renaissance, religious wars
8. 1600-1660: Henry IV-Louis XIII-Richelieu and Mazarin
9. The reign of Louis XIV (1660-1715): Versailles and Paris
10. The 18th century
11. The French Revolution in Paris and the First Empire (1789-1815)
12. 1815-1870: the Restoration, the July Monarchy
13. From 1870 to World War II: La Belle Epoque, trends of the 20th century, World War I, between the wars, Paris under the Occupation
