Description: 

The purpose of this course is to introduce the American student to modern Maghrebian Fracophone Literature. The course studies novels, short stories and poems by Moroccan, Algerian and Tunisian writers. Special and constant emphasis will fall upon the technical method and thematic concerns, language and tragic vision; and therefore, study and discussion revolve around problems of genre, social and cultural identity, and the effects of irony in the works.

Learning outcomes: 

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

-Understand of the nature of Maghrebian Francophone Literature.

-Speak with an enhanced knowledge of world literature.

-Enjoy reading works of a significant era of post-colonial Maghreb.

-Interpret with acumen foreign literature.

  -Undertake a comparative study between Maghrebian literature and, say, American literature.

Method of presentation: 

A variety of major and minor works are studied by means of close textual analysis, since the themes and issues raised generally unfold themselves in subtleties of style, tone, and point of view. Students should consult pertinent studies of the history, social and cultural background to modern Maghrebian Francophone Literature. The approach to this literature in class is by means of textual analysis and debate; exposes and written essays will consist of critical analysis of seminal passages of these works.

Required work and form of assessment: 

-Class participation and exposes: 15%

-In class midterm exams: 20%

-Research paper (10-15 pages) due by week 12: 25%

-Final exam: 40%

Brief Biography of Instructor: 

Driss Adli holds a Ph.D in comparative literature. His thesis, titled “The Representational Form in O’Neill and Ibsen’s Drama: A comparative Study,” was prepared during his study visits at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville (1993—1996), and defended at the University Hassan II, Mohammedia. Currently he is a professor of Comparative Literature at the Faculty of Arts, Mohammedia. Professor Adli has taught English language at various levels and a variety of  courses ranging from “British and American literature and Culture”, “Literary criticism”, “Comparative Drama” (European, African, and American Dramas). Dr. Adli has given talks and presentations on various issues related to Maghrebian culture and literature at American and Moroccan universities. Currently, he is directing a research group on Comparative Literature at the Faculty of Arts, University Hassan II, Mohammedia. Among his recent publications, “The Semiotics of Performance and the Semiotics of Reception”, Bouhout, N.10, 2006, “Towards a Model of Teaching Drama at the University”, Bouhout, 12-13, 2007. “Globalization and the Decline of Utopia”, Bouhout, N.14 (forthcoming, November 2008). Professor Adli masters Arabic, Berbere, French and English.
