Description: 

This course assumes that the student can recognize basic grammatical structures and is able to conduct a conversation in French in situations like hotel reservations, buying a ticket at the train station, and inquiring about flights at the airport, etc.

The course is designed to enable students to increase their communicative competence in French. It focuses on the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing with more focus on Speaking and Reading. Students read and discuss authentic French material such as articles from daily newspapers/magazines, and other texts related to the religion, politics, culture, and economics of North Africa and the Middle East.

Students are also required to read or listen to the news media and discuss current political issues in a debate format, as well as to give oral presentations in French. They are expected to express their point of view, describing and narrating events both orally and in writing. By the end of this course, students will reach a level where they can read and understand authentic texts and communicate with native speakers of French on a variety of topics.

Prerequisites: 

Four semesters of college-level French or the equivalent.

Learning outcomes: 

 By the end of the course, each student is able to:

•      express herself/himself in the target language using more complex grammatical structures and a wider range of French expressions.

•      read and understand authentic material written in French.

•      listen to and understand an authentic spoken French.

•      discuss current themes related to the Arab World.

•      give a short presentation related to the Arab World.

Method of presentation: 

The student is expected to do all homework outside of class. In-class activities will integrate the four basic communication skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The teacher will facilitate and encourage pair and group work in class.

Required work and form of assessment: 

Weekly quizzes and writing assignments, presentations, class participation, homework, midterm exam, and final exam.

Required readings: 

 The course is essentially based on some texts from a French textbook, Grammaire progressive du français. Niveau Intermédiare. Maïa Grégoire et Odile Thiévenaz. CLE International, and authentic material; namely, articles taken from newspapers and magazines that revolve around topics of current issues related to culture, politics, history, etc. These topics deal mainly with issues related to North Africa and the Middle East.
