Description: 

The objective of this course is for students to understand the historical process that has led to the current political, administrative and territorial configuration of Spain in different autonomous communities, as well as the consequences that derive from present autonomous organizations. The course will give a vision of Spain from regional reality, which will tackle the geographical diversity of the country, the history of the birth and development of the regionalisms and nationalisms, the cultural and socio-economic variables that define the autonomic indicators, and, finally, the current political situation in each of the autonomies as well as their relation with the central government.

Learning outcomes: 

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Have knowledge of the main features that define the various autonomous communities in Spain and make them different.
  • Understand the historical process that has led to the current autonomous state.
  • Analyze the current relations among autonomous communities and between these and the central government.
Method of presentation: 

Lectures, discussions on selected readings and student research papers, presentations of field study activities.

Required work and form of assessment: 

• Mid-term exam (30%)

• Final exam (30%)

• Research paper (20%). Students will submit two 4-page papers. One paper will be about a region of Spain. This paper will be presented in class along with another student and a Powerpoint presentation. Another paper will be a summary of some videos as well as new and field study activities.
