Plaza del Dos de Mayo

The monument in this popular square commemorates two captains and war heroes, Daoiz and Velarde. The square was the scene of historical events during the War of Independence against France in the early 19th Century and the central arch was the entrance to the Monteleón barracks where the city's defenders rose to arms. Today, the area is surrounded by lively bars, clubs and sidewalk cafes.

"[My favorite landmark is] La Plaza de Dos de Mayo in Malasaña. Although there are more impressive statues in all parts of Madrid, this one is located in the most youthful, exciting and lively neighborhood in Madrid. Malasaña was the epicenter for the cultural movement in the 80s among the youth of Spain. The statue symbolizes not only the independence of the Spanish after their own war of independence against France, but the freedom of the Spanish people after the fall of Dictator Franco. It is a landmark loaded with spirit and meaning." -Steven G., Penn State University
