Dr. William Louis Gaines Endowed Scholarship for History or International Relations

Description: 

This scholarship is named in honor of Dr. William Louis Gaines, President of IES from 1974-1992. Dr. Gaines was dedicated to strengthening IES' academic framework, broadening the scope of IES' locations, and securing the financial foundation of the organization.

Open to students majoring in History or International Relations.

Amount: 
Ranges up to $1,875
Eligibility: 

Open to students who meet the following criteria:

  • Attend a private college or university that is a Member or Associate Member of the IES Consortium.  In addition, your home school must have a policy of transferring at least 75% of institutional aid for study abroad.
  • Currently receive financial aid from their home school. The home school must have a policy of transferring at least 75% of home school aid to IES.
  • 3.3 minimum GPA.
  • History or International Relations major.
  • Must be admitted to and attend an IES program for an academic year or calendar year duration.
  • The scholarship recipient will be required to present a brief written bio statement. Guidelines will be provided with notice of award.
  • Return Requirement: If awarded one of these scholarships, at the conclusion of the IES Abroad program you agree to submit a 1-page statement about your experience abroad, including how it has affected you personally, professionally, and academically and how this scholarship supported your endeavors.  Once submitted, this statement becomes property of IES Abroad and excerpts may be used in any/all IES Abroad electronic and printed publications. Additional details and instructions will be emailed to you after your program ends.

  • Apply to an IES Abroad Fall, Spring, Academic Year or Calendar Year Program (if you have not done so already)
  • Submit an IES Abroad Scholarship Application [2]. You will be required to upload the following materials for this application:
    • Transcript - one (1) additional college transcript (in addition to the one submitted with the IES Abroad  Application).  Clear and legible photocopies are accepted via upload or mail, but NO fax copies will be accepted.
    • Faculty Letter of Recommendation from a professor who has commented on your academic performance.
    • Biographic Statement - Guidelines for writing this statement are in the FAQs (link above).Submit
    • Personal Statement (250 word count) - Tell us about your academic interests and your reasons for studying abroad. Discuss any relevant work or extra-curricular experiences that may apply to your History or International Relations major and discuss the goals you hope to achieve while studying abroad.
  • Submit an IES Abroad Need Based Aid Application [3]. Email the completed application to scholarships@iesabroad.org [4] or fax it to Attn: IES Abroad Scholarships at 312.944.1448.
