The course deals with the years of emergence into modernist art in Germany, taking chosen artists and their works as an example. In spite of the heterogeneity of the various art trends, one basic principle underlies all artistic groups: the questioning of the traditional rules with regard to composition,
color, perspective and thus of art generally. Together with the analysis of works of art, artistic theory therefore presents the main emphasis in attaining a deeper understanding of the development of art in the twentieth century.
Prerequisites:
An approximate conception of art-history before 1900. Open minds.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will have a good knowledge about Expressionism. Students will also possess the ability to describe and interpret even the most complex painting.

Exercises in the description and interpretation of Art, analysis of texts, class discussion, presentations, museum visits, group work, and written homework
Required work and form of assessment:
