Description:

This course studies Berlin as a city, a national capital, a hub between Eastern and Western Europe and a case study of globalization. It analyzes the various definitions of globalization and how it affects cities with regard to their economic and social structure, and their challenges and solutions in fields such as energy, mobility, and housing. The course also introduces the functioning of European markets, their integration into a global economy and what that means for people who live in large European cities.

In a comparative perspective we will analyze how the establishment of a European Single Market with a common currency, the Euro, and the financial and debt crisis led to a new relationship between politics and the economy. We will also look at different responses to globalization and compare debates in the US, Germany (Berlin), France (Paris) and Russia (St. Petersburg).

The course offers various opportunities for contact and practical experience through excursions, discussions, and guest lecturers from businesses, associations, political institutions, and diplomacy. An IES Abroad field study trip to Paris and St. Petersburg will round out the course.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, students are able to:

Explain the discourses on globalization, urban development and how European cities deal with challenges of globalization.
Connect the discussion on globalization, the debt crisis and social and economic changes on a micro-level.
Summarize recent political and socio-economic changes in Europe and be able to interpret these developments. Germany, France and Russia will offer very specific cases to study development and interdependence.

Lectures, excursions, conferences, guest lecturers, student presentations, and discussion in class

Required work and form of assessment:

Final grades will be based on a midterm (20%), a final examination (25%), a term paper (7 pages) (25%), and oral presentation and participation (30%). Class attendance is required.

Brief Biography of Instructor:

Prof. Ulrich Brueckner studied Political Science, German Literature, and History at the University of Weurzburg and the Freie Universitaet Berlin (FU Berlin). Since the mid-1980s European integration has been his field of specialization. From 1992 to 2002, Brueckner worked at the Department for Political Sciences at the FU Berlin as lecturer and later as Jean Monnet Chairholder, an EU program for teaching activities in the field of European Integration. His Ph.D is on the role of the European Commission in the policy-making of the EU. From 1997 until 2003 he also worked as a Jean Monnet visiting professor at Szczecin University in Poland. Brueckner has taught at Stanford University Berlin and California, ECNU and Fudan University in Shanghai, MGIMO Moscow, Sabanci University in Istanbul, University of Economics in Bratislava, the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, IESEG Business School in Lille and in Dubai.

Brueckner is a member of TEAM Europe, and works with the International Training for Diplomats Programme of the German Federal Foreign Office. Brueckner's current fields of interests are institutional developments in the EU, the political economy of European integration, cultural policy, external affairs and Eastward enlargement.
