To Jo from 4 months ago:

I'm currently on the train heading to the airport after leaving Freiburg. Having some time to reflect, I wanted to write to you about your time ahead. The journey ahead is just as challenging as you might have anticipated. From days to nights during my study abroad experience it's been a real test. What may appear as a struggle is actually a beautiful type of challenge. Growth only happens when we step out of our comfort zones and that's what this journey has been for me. Looking back on the four months I can see themes of adventure, independence and transformation.

Each day brought something from the dynamics of the European Union program to exploring places throughout our time here. Some standout moments include our trek in the Black Forest experiencing snowfall. Then there was the club scene in Berlin and our opportunity to savor Europe's flavors for the first time. Let's not forget about our experiences in Brussels and Paris. Despite feeling uncomfortable and chilly at times we pushed through. Now hold memories of iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Brussels charming Old Town will always be with us. Lastly, Athens and Bulgaria! These destinations truly left an impression, especially Athens with its atmosphere and tropical weather.

Every location taught me something about myself.

In the depths of the Black Forest I uncovered a sense of freedom while journeying through the trails. Berlin showed me the thrill of losing myself in the moment dancing into the night amidst a sea of strangers who quickly felt like friends. In Brussels I embraced the art of finding joy in pleasures, such as indulging in a waffle on a chilly day or admiring the delicate beauty of cobblestone streets. Paris embodied love in all its forms—not love but a profound fondness for life itself especially as I gazed up at the intricate iron framework of the Eiffel Tower.

Athens served as a reminder of time's unceasing march (not to mention a brutal April in Freiburg) and the enduring nature of culture while Bulgaria revealed to me the beauty in the unexpected. These diverse encounters interwoven together to create a tapestry of profound growth.

Above all it was my independence that proved to be truly transformative. Navigating cities, managing finances and making decisions became second nature. Confronting hurdles like strikes and language barriers taught me lessons in adaptability and resourcefulness.

As I bid farewell to Freiburg it's clear that transformation has taken root within me. The person who arrived here four months ago is not the person who now stands more self assured and eager to face whatever challenges lie ahead with renewed determination.

To the future Jo who reads this, understand that the challenges ahead are opportunities for growth. Embrace every moment whether it brings happiness or sorrow and know that progress often arises unexpectedly. Push your limits. Allow each new encounter to mold you into an individual. You possess abilities. This expedition marks only the start of your potential. I am so proud of you!
