Program requirements:
  • 18 Years of Age
  • In good standing at your home school
  • 3.0 GPA or Better on a 4.0 Scale
  • Junior or Senior standing when program begins
  • Final admissions decision rests with the Universiteit van Amsterdam
  • Please note: the Study Amsterdam program will not review applicants with cumulative GPAs below 2.9. Applicants whose GPAs are between 2.9 and 3.0 will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis (additional application materials below are required).
Required application materials:
  • IES Abroad Application for Admission
  • Authorization and Evaluation.  Your on-campus study abroad advisor will instruct you on approval for this program
  • Official Transcript.  Submit one official transcript for each college/university you have attended since high school
  • Academic Statement of Purpose. This 500-word statement should state what academic area of study you hope to pursue while in Amsterdam and include potential IES and UvA course choices in which you would want to enroll. Please visit the UvA website to view a tentative list of courses offered at UvA through the Undergraduate Certificate Programme in Humanities and Social Sciences.  You may take courses in any of these clusters.  Note that you are only listing preliminary course choices on this statement; course offerings are subject to change.  Master's level courses are not open to IES Abroad students.  Please give a brief explanation of your current studies to provide a general overview of your academic background (but don't specifically list all classes taken to date).  Also, mention previous study, volunteer, or work experiences overseas, if any. If you are interested in the Research Experience, include a short paragraph explaining your desired project and goals for the experience. Be sure to write your name at the top of the statement.
  • If cumulative GPA is below 3.0, the following additional components are required:
    • Professor Recommendation Form or Letter
    • Personal Academic Essay.  Although there is no length requirement the essay must address GPA, any particular academic challenges faced, and goals for studying abroad in your selected location.
